Candida auris is a type of fungus that can cause severe infections in humans. It was first identified in Japan in 2009 and has since been reported in numerous countries worldwide, including the United States. The most recent outbreaks are spreading throughout Nevada, Ohio, and Georgia.

Candida auris infections can be challenging to treat because it is often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs. It is primarily spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment or person-to-person contact with an infected individual.  It is important to note that it is not spread through the air, like other fungal infections. In addition, the fungus can spread quickly between patients in healthcare settings, leading to outbreaks.

Symptoms of Candida auris infections vary depending on the site of infection but can include fever, chills, and sepsis. It can cause infections in the bloodstream, urinary tract, and wounds.

Prevention of Candida auris infections includes strict infection control practices in healthcare settings, such as isolating infected patients, using personal protective equipment, and maintaining clean environments. If someone suspects they may have a Candida auris infection, the CDC recommends they should seek medical attention immediately.
